Rock-solid defence together with pinpoint accuracy was the necessary formula to bring the leaders’ unbeaten run to an end. The winning formula – the one and only that worked this Saturday at El Alcoraz. SD Huesca found the net in the opening 15 minutes by means of Carrillo, which led directly to an eventual home win.
Cuco Ziganda made a couple of changes in his starting XI this time, introducing Jérémy Blasco and Florian Miguel in defence, as he knew from where to stop this powerful Las Palmas side. The hosts found the spark of the opening exchanges, especially through Gerard Valentín, who assisted to make it 1-0. Carrillo brought the ball down and passed it to Valentín, who slalomed through several bodies inside the box and crossed it back to Carrillo. That happened after 13 minutes, so the Oscenses had a treasure to defend close to Andrés’s goal, trying to find another bright spark. They could have, following several sprints from Juan Carlos, but the score remained 1-0 before the interval.
After the break, the quest was still the same, trying to connect with Carrillo up top and working hard in defence. However, the visitors won the ball, keeping Huesca in the last third of the pitch and trying to find a bit of class or quality to make the difference, but in front of goal there was very little to get the pulse racing. Cuco made some changes, sending Timor and Tomeo on in defence and Kanté to add renewed pace and energy to his side’s attack. The forward was very close to make it 2-0.
SD Huesca fought for 94 minutes in front of an Alcoraz crowd that pushed the players, especially in the closing stages, when the islanders were piling up the goal attempts with in an exciting final flurry. However, Ziganda’s men kept a clean sheet and secured a valuable three points, fighting and not giving up until the end. The fans erupted when the referee blew the final whistle and the team joined them, proving that we’re stronger together.
