SD HUESCA BEAT CD CAYÓN AND REACH THE NEXT ROUND

Two goals by Marc Mateu and Carlos Kevin sealed the match 0-2 in SD Huesca’s favour in Cantabria in the first round of Copa del Rey

SD Huesca travelled to Cantabria to play the first round of Copa del Rey. The Azulgranas – wearing our unusual turquoise away kit on this occasion – faced CD Cayón, a Spanish Third Division team. Xisco’s side had to sweat in order to win, as the game was open until the stoppage time, when Carlos Kevin slotted in the second goal for the team.

As it usually happens in this competition, the coach made some alterations to the line-up, as some of the men who do not start often in LaLiga SmartBank took part in the first XI, and so did some of the second team. Five boys of SD Huesca B travelled with the team to Sarón (Cantabria): Barba, Barri, Aparicio, Carlos Kevin and Euse Monzó. The first three of them started this time, as well as Pablo Insua, handing his first start of the season only recently recovered from a ligament injury.

Not only the centre-back but also the team did their duty on the poor pitch, which was anything but ideal due to the recent heavy rain in the area. It made it hard to exchange passes to connect with the forwards Enzo, Pitta or Escriche and so it remained goalless at the break. Statistics, however, backed Xisco’s men up.

Nevertheless, we had to wait for fifteen minutes after the restart until the score did it, too. Marc Mateu, who had come off the bench at the start of the second half, took a floated cross and the ball found the net. This became the first goal of the team in Copa del Rey this season. A few minutes before, Cayón had been reduced to ten men following the second yellow card for one of their players.

Although the home team tried to find a sloppy ball to reach the next round and fought to approach the Oscenses’ box pushed by their fans, the Azulgranas were brighter. Say a shot from Escriche that went a little wide before being replaced by the young Manu Rico, who made his first-team debut. The scorer for the first goal became the provider for the second one: Marc Mateu assisted this time Carlos Kevin, who scored making it 0-2 as the clocked ticked into injury time.
