The return to the silver category meant that for the first time SD Huesca was among the favourites to return to the First Division. Relegation prompted a complete overhaul of the squad with 21 new additions, including Japanese Premier League champion Shinji Okazaki, who was unveiled at El Alcoraz as a big star in front of more than one thousand fans. With Míchel Sánchez as the new coach, consistency was the norm throughout the season. Dominating the opposition with the ball, a deep and competitive squad and an impregnable Alcoraz were the hallmarks of a team that managed to stay, at the very least, among the promotion play-off spots from start to finish. In March, the team from Alto Aragon entered the break in the competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the fourth position, five points adrift of direct promotion and six points behind the leaders, a considerable gap.

However, the blue and scarlet completed an impeccable sprint of 11 matches, with great feats such as its first-ever victory at La Romareda in an official match against a direct rival such as Real Zaragoza (0-1), with an agonising goal by Javi Galán in the 95th minute that allowed the team to dream that all was possible. With six games to go, Huesca moved into second place and was able to seal a return to the First Division on matchday 41 with a 3-0 win at El Alcoraz against CD Numancia, helped by the slip-ups of its opponents.

The prize would be even greater when the team traveled to Gijón in the closing game of LaLiga SmartBank, as the Huesca side lifted the Second Division champions' cup on the pitch of El Molinón, beating Real Sporting (0-1) and taking advantage of Cádiz CF's defeat to overtake it at the top of the table. The first professional trophy in the history of SD Huesca was a reality and with it the return to the best league in the world just one season later.
